The Fall of Berlin was the final chapter of the Second World War in Europe — twelve days that ended twelve years of terror.

A City Surrounded

By April 1945, Germany was crushed between two great armies. From the west came the Allies; from the east, Stalin’s vast Red Army. Stalin wanted Berlin first, and he sent over two and a half million soldiers to take it. The city that had once ruled most of Europe was now a fortress of rubble, waiting for the end.

The Last Defenders

Berlin was no longer defended by the mighty armies of earlier years. Its defenders were exhausted men, elderly volunteers, and boys as young as fourteen, handed a weapon and told to hold the line. Against millions of battle-hardened Soviet troops, they never stood a chance.

Street by Street

On 16 April, the final assault began. After breaking the German lines at the Seelow Heights outside the city, the Red Army pushed into Berlin itself. The fighting was brutal and close — every building a stronghold, every street a deadly maze. Civilians sheltered in cellars and U-Bahn railway tunnels as their world collapsed above them.

The Bunker

Deep beneath the city, Adolf Hitler hid in his concrete Führerbunker, still issuing orders to armies that no longer existed. On 29 April he married Eva Braun. The next day, 30 April 1945, Hitler took his own life. The man who had plunged the world into war was gone, and his thousand-year Reich lay in ruins above him.

The Flag Over the Reichstag

Even as the bunker fell silent, the battle raged on for the Reichstag, the great German parliament. Soviet soldiers fought room by room until, at last, they raised the red flag over its roof — an image that became one of the most famous in history.

Surrender

On 2 May, Berlin surrendered. Days later, on 8 May 1945, Germany surrendered completely, and the war in Europe was over. The cost was staggering: hundreds of thousands dead, including nearly a hundred thousand Soviet soldiers in the battle for the city alone.

Legacy

From the ashes of Berlin, a new and divided world would rise — one that would shape the decades to come. The Fall of Berlin ended the darkest chapter in human history, a reminder of both the horror of tyranny and the price of ending it.

Watch the full
